Gardening Ideas With Leftover Bricks

The all-white room is a classic, but without enough texture the crisp look can go stale fast. Some might use velvet couches to bring warmth to builder-grade abodes, but designers like Leanne Ford prefer to coat original features in thin layers of whitewash to bring antique elements into the 21st century.

If your style is more farmhouse than penthouse, this quick paint job can elevate your space in half a day. Read on for our favorite way to get the finish.

Materials:

  • Latex paint
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Paint stirrer
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint rag
  • Painter's tape
  • Drop cloth or kraft paper

    Prep your wall

Ultra-Hide Zero Pure White Interior Paint

First, lay a drop cloth under the brick wall and tape it down to prevent tripping. Whitewash paint will be runnier than standard paint, so if you're using kraft paper, stack multiple layers to protect the floor. Then, tape off the floor, ceiling and any intersecting wall sections.

Clean the brick with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Let the brick fully dry.

    Apply the finish

Mix a 50:50 ratio of white latex paint and water in a paint bucket, stirring well to make a smooth wash. Latex paint is water-based and should dilute easily. If the wash separates while you paint, stir the paint until it is integrated seamlessly before applying.

Fill the grout lines with a paint brush in small sections. Follow with a rag dipped in the wash and dab onto the brick in a sporadic pattern, adding paint for a more opaque look. Start light with application and build up layers until you've achieved the right style for your space.

Let dry overnight before removing kraft paper and tape.
